State of Nutrition Education in Medical Schools with Dr Michael Klaper, MD
Manage episode 363576551 series 3450129
If your doctor can’t tell you what “eat healthy” means, it’s not entirely their fault. Historically, doctors and other health professionals don’t receive in-depth nutrition training.
Dr. Michael Kaper is out to change that. After a fifty-year career as a primary care physician, Dr. Klaper, a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, now focuses on sharing with fellow health professionals the science of how health-promoting food and lifestyle choices can arrest and reverse chronic disease.
His “Moving Medicine Forward” Initiative promotes applied nutrition being taught in medical schools. Moving Medicine Forward is a 501(c)3 that supports the outreach and education to physicians on disease reversal through plant-based nutrition.
A long-time radio host and a pilot, Dr. Klaper has served as nutrition advi-sor to NASA’s programs for space colonists on the Moon and Mars and on the Nutrition Task Force of the American Medical Students Association.
Dr Kalper will discuss the State of Nutrition Education in Medical Schools including:
· Medical school curriculum addresses limited information about nutrition: Residents are left with unanswered questions and how MMF is changing that.
· Comparative advantage of using diet to navigate and correct the cause of disease vs treating symptomology/the "western" method.
· Healing patients and the planet for the future forward requires support for this grassroots initiative to educate medical school students on whole-food plant-based nutrition.
