Join me as I interview Amadea Morningstar, a shining star in Ayurveda and Food & Healing for 40 + years. She is the creator of Ayurveda Polarity & Yoga Institute in Sante Fe, New Mexico. She is committed to teaching both Ayurveda in all its holistic and component parts (everything is Ayurvedic!) and polarity therapy, a hands-on healing system designed to enable the body to regain its natural state of balance. Amadea is a prolific author. Her most well-known book is Ayurvedic Cooking along with Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners. Her most recent book is titled Easy Healing Drinks from the Wisdom of Ayurveda, Delicious and Nourishing Recipes for all Seasons. Her blog has been voted in the top 30 in the Ayurveda category - she marries a variety of topics with Ayurveda including: recipes and food; politics; women's health; inclusion and diversity; sustainability; living by yogic and Buddhist principles. Wow, what a commitment she has made to helping us heal!
In this interview we take a deep dive into two traditional recipes (one is recognizably American comfort food; the other a Middle Eastern dish). Amadea shows us how to play with a recipe and make it a complete Ayurvedic dish and from there, a complete Ayurvedic meal. This exercise is a prelude for Amadea's upcoming course: Dynamics of Ayurvedic Nutrition: Adapt Recipes for Individual & Cultural Needs. What's beautiful about the way Amadea teaches us to how "to play" with a recipe is that it still adheres to its ethnic roots, its cultural integrity with the "add-ons" that Ayurveda deems important: delicious, nourishing, easy to digest, easy to assimilate, easy to evacuate, bringing bliss to your mind-body-spirit.
Amadea also touches on her current interest in racial inclusion and diversity. She recently completed a seven-week "Inclusion as Medicine Course," leading participants through each of the chakras as a pathway to begin healing our biases, subtle and not so subtle.
We conclude with a series of rapid-fire questions:

  • What do the words patience and persistence mean for you?
  • Now that our lives have become more virtual – meaning our connections are also more virtual – one suggestion for thriving in this new virtual reality?
  • What are the top three tips you can offer that are simple, yet profoundly healing?
  • What does the term “wise woman” mean to you?
  • Your favorite book on Ayurveda (besides your own)?
  • You are obviously a big reader. What you are currently reading?
  • Your opinion on what it will take for Ayurveda to infiltrate our modern life – the way Yoga has – in the U.S.?
