Redmond Hotshots w/ Gabe Mason and Jordan Gulley
Manage episode 303489958 series 2510129
As a Redmond IHC alumni, I cannot begin to explain the incredible experience that I had with Redmond Hotshots. So, that's why I have Superintendent Gabe Mason and Asst. Superintendent Jordan Gulley from Redmond IHC sit down to chat about one of the four Leadership Training and Development Hotshot crews in the nation...
In August 1960, the Washington Office authorized the establishment of the first inter-regional crew in the Pacific Northwest, which became the Redmond Hotshot Crew. The crew functioned as a regular hotshot crew with temporary crewmembers from 1960 through 1980.
The Redding Interagency Hotshot Crew based in California was the first organization to use the developmental detail-training concept for permanent employees. The number of interested applicants however, far exceeded the quota offered to the Pacific Northwest. The increasing number of interested candidates, along with the 1977 fire fatality of Okanogan Assistant Fire Management Officer Ron Neely on the Gibson Creek Fire, served to support the establishment of a detail crew in the Pacific Northwest.
In 1981, Redmond IHC was converted to a leadership developmental training crew. From 1981 to the present, the Redmond Interagency Hotshot Crew Leadership Development Program has provided the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, State Natural Resource Agencies, the Forest Services of Mexico, U.S.S.R., France, and New Zealand with both fireground and classroom training opportunities in fire and fuels.
Here is a little more about Gabe and Jordan:

I currently operate as the Redmond interagency hotshot crew superintendent, and am actively involved in the leadership develop courses at the regional level. I love my time with family, coaching sports, drawing, and studying anthropology."
Jordan Gulley:
"Jordan began his career on the Tonasket RD in 2007. While completing his studies at Washington State University he accepted an apprentice position on the Paisley R.D. in 2010and attended Academy 52 the same year. Over his career, Jordan has worked on a Type 2 IA Crews, Hotshot Crews, Helitack Crews, and Engines.
Jordan is passionate about training & promoting diversity. He serves as a Stress First Aid Trainer, Regional Lead Instructor and is the African American Special Emphasis Program Manager on the Deschutes NF. Jordan strives to continue to make an impact within his communities.
