Labor is a journey that you will take as a woman. If you look at the signs of labor as a journey you will be able to understand what is happening and when you are truly ready to go to the hospital.
If you understand labor as a journey than you will have an expectation of how long it will take and what to expect. But just like in journey labor can come with some detours and it can vary in duration. It is important to understand that labor and delivery are longer for some women and shorter for others. The journey varies for each woman.
Labor is a journey of regular contractions, a certain interval of time, and pain. You need to have all three of these before you know for sure that you are in labor.
The first of these is regular contractions. Regular or frequent contractions are defined as contractions happening every two to four minutes, two to three minutes, or three to five minutes. These are all variations of labor contractions that have a frequent pattern. They must have an interval of fewer than five minutes to be considered frequent contractions.
So if you are contracting frequently but it is every fifteen minutes then that is NOT frequent. Frequent is every two to five minutes.
The second part of understanding the signs of labor is the length of contractions. How long is your contraction lasting for each time you have one. Contractions that are regular in nature are sixty to ninety seconds long. So, your contraction starts and it lasts a certain time period. In order for your contractions to be frequent that time period needs to be sixty to ninety seconds.
Pain is the third thing that must take place in order for you to be in labor. Pain is a necessary process in order to deliver your baby. Men, cannot handle the pain of labor and delivery, but women have been blessed with the strength and fortitude to handle the pain of labor and delivery.
