First, let’s talk about the fact that planning is so important when it comes to pregnancy. Getting pregnant can take time for women, and it is easy to get frustrated when it doesn’t happen today. Taking time to plan when you want to get pregnant will help you control your anxiety.
So, let’s talk about the reasons why some women have irregular periods. Birth control changes your hormones so that you don’t ovulate. When you stop taking birth control, it may take up to one year for ovulation to return. Depo-Provera and Implanon/Nexplanon can take one year or more for ovulation to return. If you have a low BMI (less than 18), or if you have a high BMI (greater than 30) your hormones may be out of balance and you may have irregular periods and not ovulate.
It is possible to ovulate if you have irregular periods. However, it is very difficult to know when and if you are ovulating. The only way to know for sure is if you get pregnant. Using an ovulation predictor kit or having sex every day could work, but this is not predictable or consistent.
A regular period is somewhat specialized to you. You need to mark on your calendar when you begin one cycle (the first day you see blood) and count to the first day of your next cycle (the first day you see blood). How many days was that? Is your next cycle the same as your last? How about the last cycle? This is predictable, consistent, and it means you are regular. Say you have a 28-day cycle. You may ovulate on day 14. Your fertile window is the time period that you may ovulate within if you don’t ovulate on day 14. Your fertile window is day 10 to day 18. You and your husband should have sex every 48-hours starting on day 10 through day 18.
