The new bike lanes in Sofia—if this change were easy, it would have been made years ago

Over the years, cyclists have repeatedly expressed their desire to have better bicycle infrastructure in Sofia, Milen Angelov, the cycling mayor of Sofia from the global Bicycle Mayor Network, commented to Radio Sofia.
"To have connected bike lanes, places where mothers with children can safely ride a bike and move around in an urban environment. We haven't been as vocal, we haven't been as aggressive. We have done quiet marches, protests and signatures," said Angelov.
According to him, moving by bicycle is a necessity caused by the fact that cities are increasingly clogged with cars.
"The city has nowhere to expand internally. With traffic becoming more and more difficult, more and more people are looking for an alternative way of moving, including public transport, because there are many improvements to it as well, including walking, scooters, and bicycles. There are many advantages, many people recognize them, either for economic or time reasons," explained the bicycle mayor of Sofia from the global Bicycle Mayor Network.
According to him, places for cyclists in cities are limited. Regarding the new bike lanes in the center of Sofia, Milen Angelov commented that it was no accident that this change was long delayed.
"If it was easy, they would have made this change years ago. These are the so-called unpopular measures, but it is now necessary. Of course there will be dissenting opinions, of course those opinions must be heard and if there are indeed problems related to parking or passing, they must be adequately reflected, but this is the way and inevitably we must start walking him," said Milen Angelov.
