Abstract:

Chorea Huntington ist eine neurodegenerative Erbkrankheit, die bei Betroffenen schon in jungen Jahren zum Verlust der Kontrolle über die eigene Muskulatur („Veitstanz“) und zu tiefgreifenden Veränderungen der Persönlichkeit führt. Da bis heute keine effektive Behandlung zur Verfügung steht wird intensiv an der Erkrankung geforscht. Auch unser Gast Arne Böker möchte das Verständnis der molekularen Mechanismen hinter der Huntington-Krankheit erweitern. Der Physiker hat hierfür an der Simulation des entscheidenden Huntingtin-Proteins gearbeitet und untersucht, wie es zur krankheitsauslösenden Fehlfaltung des Eiweißmoleküls kommt. In dieser Episode erklärt er die biophysikalischen Grundlagen seiner Arbeit, warum seine Ergebnisse vom Zufall abhängen und was er für Schlüsse ziehen konnte.
