For some, it only takes one week.

Think back to when you were a staff member, was it last year? Ten years ago? 20 years ago? Now look at where you are now. Was there a pivotal camp moment that helped point you to where you are today? For our Guest Emma Fogel there was.

A moment at camp pointed her towards social work which eventually came full circle as a friend and ally of the camping world.

Emma Fogel is a Registered Social Worker with a Master of Social Work from the University of Toronto. She has a private practice in Toronto where she specializes in supporting kids, teens, young adults and parents through challenging life moments.

She has worked within the Ontario Camp Association for the past three years, offering pre-camp mental health trainings and support throughout the camp season for campers, staff and administrative teams.

Tune in to this episode to hear about:

  • How do you identify? What words would you use to identify yourself?
  • Do you think about your privilege? What privilege do you think you carry?
  • As a leader do you feel responsibility or pressure to discuss your identity? How do you cope with that?
  • You are currently working as a therapist, how did your time at camp influence your decision to enter into this profession?
  • Are there any lessons from camp either as a camper or staff member you carry with you now or reflect on?
  • How has camp shaped how you work with young people/your practice?
  • What made you move away from working at camp?
  • How do you stay connected to the camping world now that you no longer work at camp?
