S4, E12 - Rachel Raises Awareness of Hydrops Fetalis
Manage episode 448488451 series 3612933
On this weeks episode Kelly welcomes Rachel, from sunny Devon, to the podcast.
Rachel explains how isolated she felt after the loss of her daughter Isla and wants
to raise awareness of the affects of Hydrops
(NHS definition of Hydrops Fetalis . Foetal hydrops is a rare but very serious condition in which an unborn baby accumulates excessive fluid within their body. Six out of ten babies with foetal hydrops die, and those that survive often have very severe complications. )
Rachel talks about her birth trauma and the whole experience of having to deal with the reality of giving birth to her baby that will not survive. She also explains how she struggled to hear, understand and deal with the fact that Isla's death was medically classed as a miscarriage, not a stillbirth, due to her birth being a few days under 24 weeks. This also affected their maternity/paternity leave, the right to a free funeral service and legal rights to register her birth & death.
(In the UK a baby born at 24weeks and over is classed as a stillbirth and able to register their birth/death. Any baby born under 24th is classed as a miscarriage)
