31:05Vicki Sokolik refuses to be an Ostrich. Her son brought to her attention the crisis of unhoused youth — youth unhoused, not living with a parent/guardian, and not in foster care — in America, and she has been fighting to support this vulnerable population every since. Most active in Tampa Bay, Florida, Vicki is the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Starting Right, Now, which removes barriers for unaccompanied homeless youth to cultivate long-term well-being and self-sufficiency. She is also the author of the new book, “If You See Them: Young, Unhoused, and Alone in America.” Vicki Sokolik joined host Jay Ruderman to discuss the many ways unhoused youth fall through the cracks in our society, how her organization helps them, and also how to build trust with people who could use your help. Episode Chapters (00:00) Intro (01:10) Vicki’s origin story (02:40) What is “unhoused youth?” (06:40) What should a person do if they worry they see an unhoused youth? (08:19) How have conversations around unhoused youth changed in Vicki’s 20 years working with them? (11:02) How do people get the word out and help unhoused youth? (14:55) Vicki’s new book (16:48) How Vicki builds trust (20:10) What do students receive at Starting Right, Now? (22:58) How does Vicki balance advocacy and direct support? ×we're back from botswana! in this episode, i share my reflections and learnings from this life-changing trip. in addition to eating AMAZING food and being blown away by nature, i ended up learning a lot about myself—specifically, my relationship to trauma and god. (crazy, right?) if you've been following my journey on social, i share more on the specific locations, events, and so much more. have any thoughts, comments, questions, or stories? feel free to email them to nadyatalks@gmail.com! this past month has been filled to the brim with back to back health appointments. i've always been the kind of person to avoid going to the doctors, even if i am in pain. however, the time has come for me to finally address everything. in this episode, i'm reflecting on aging, physical pain, my overall health, and why it's important to value your body. have any thoughts, comments, questions, or stories? feel free to email them to nadyatalks@gmail.com! a few months ago i found a lump in my left breast. it's been a frustrating process, to say the least. i'm sure it's fine, but docs haven't been able to give me an answer with 100% cerntainty, and i'm not sure how to resolve that! nobody likes uncertainty, so why is it so hard to figure this out?! in this episode i talk about what the journey of ultrasounds and second and even third opinions has been like. i'm definitely not a doctor, nor am i very knowledgable about breast cancer and breast lumps -- this is just my personal experience. this is also your reminder to give yourself a self-examination every now and then if it pertains to you! "barbie" movie spoliers ahead!! today we're talking barbie: the doll that once took the world by storm is making a comeback in popular culture thanks to the new "barbie" movie featuring margot robbie and directed by greta gerwig. a commentary on the patriarchy told through characters we're already familiar with, viewers responses have fallen all across the spectrum between love and hate. to some, it was life changing. to others, it fell flat. and for me—a proud feminist who shows her period blood on tiktok? well, i had some thoughts... have any thoughts, comments, questions, or stories? feel free to email them to nadyatalks@gmail.com! 20:06i recently witnessed ocean vuong, the iconic poet, accept an award at a gala i recently attended, in which he completely upended the way i have understood this phenomenon of "imposter syndrome." his words have been at the forefront of my mind the last week, and have felt like a catalyst to a major breakthrough i'm facing about how i understand self-worth and practice self-affection. i recently sat on a panel with ashton applewhite, the first "ageism activist" i've ever met. hearing her talk about how we're all conditioned to be ageist, and how ageism and ableism go hand in hand, was super eye-opening and thought provoking -- and i'm just going to be blunt about *all* the reflections i've been having about aging, age, and ageism. would love to know what you think!! i've been on auto pilot trying to stay focused on the busy month of work i have...while also keeping up to date with some of the heartbreaking news that has been hitting headlines over the last couple days. ignorance is bliss -- but still ignorance: so how do we balance being socially aware and up-to-date about what's happening in our world, while also maintaining peace-of-mind? ruminating on this question in this episode. i would consider my first job (outside of babysitting/working chores around the house) to be the summers i worked as a legal assistant for my mock trial coach. in this episode, i reflect on what the job taught me, and my first experience with the professional world. danggg so much has changed since then... i had a big self-care day of therapy and catching up with my psychiatrist. tldr i am, of course, still experiencing anxiety and depression symptoms, but frustrated by how i keep just getting pushed to increase my meds dosage. i want to work on the root of these symptoms and not just tack on band-aid solutions. my therapist also suggested ketamine infusion to work on some ptsd symptoms and i'm curious if anyone here has tried that before or know people who have? 24:24something you might not know about me is that i played on the boys' varsity baseball team in high school. what!? yeah, honestly it still surprises me and I still don't really understand why I decided to make such a big time commitment to something that i didn't have any prior interest in. in this episode, i reflect on past impulsive experiences that led me on unexpected journeys -- playing baseball being one of them. 20:26For the last week, I’ve been feeling pretty overwhelmed, and had more than a few panic attacks. Between lunar new year, work stress, and personal things I’m facing, it’s just feeling like…a lot. And the news about gun violence in this country does not help. In this episode, we face these thoughts, instead of trying to avoid them, and I share some things I’ve been experimenting with for coping.
