Impostor scams are extremely common in the US, with more than 5,000 victims losing $11m to phone scams in 2022, the Federal Trade Commission said. The difficulty of tracing calls and identifying scammers, as well as a lack of jurisdictional clarity, make it hard for authorities to crack down on scammers.

TikTok is reportedly in discussions with Apple and Google to avoid any obstacles related to national security concerns in the U.S. As part of its data security plan proposed to the U.S. government, every update to TikTok's software will be reviewed and distributed to the app stores by Oracle, which will also host TikTok's U.S. user data on its servers. The talks with Apple and Google are aimed at ensuring that TikTok's plan complies with their app store regulations.
