The Big Picture
Parents should be apart of the process especially when it comes to finances, but students should have the final say in the the process regarding the school that is the best fit for them, assuming it fits into the family budget.
Don’t choose a college just because you have heard of it or because it is the “popular” decision. This sheep mentality can cause you to overlook universities that would be a great fit for you.
Gap Years can be a very rewarding way to take a year off between high school and college, just make sure you have a productive plan for your year and that you communicate with your admissions representative to ensure you can defer your enrollment for a year. Mark stresses the importance of contacting each individual school and seeing how your decision will affect your standing with that school if you decide to take a gap year.
It is important to be responsive to admissions officers. They are the ones making the final decision regarding your acceptance. If you are responsive and professional you leave a great impression demonstrate that you will be a responsible and active student on their campus.
The financial piece of college admissions is very important. But it is also important to see college as an investment in your future. When considering price, also consider what your proposed education at that school will mean for your future in terms of jobs and salaries after graduation.
Be professional in the process including during phone calls, while emailing with colleges and on campus visits. You will stand out if you do!
It is extremely important to visit the colleges you are considering. It gives you a feel for the campus and a deeper level of understanding of what your experience there will be like. Make sure to prepared and ask important questions while you are there.
It is important to know that the colleges you are considering have the major you are looking for. Remember many students change majors during college so also make sure they have other majors of interest in case you are certain you will stick with your program.
International students should try to speak with someone from their own country who is currently at the college. That will give you insight into what campus and the region of the country is really like. This is particularly important if you aren’t able to visit the school before you enroll.
