Marine and the Hippie 211030 S01E29- Why Textbooks Suck.
Manage episode 337491758 series 3381954
On this Dialogue, we discuss why textbooks that are used to teach children in schools not only foreclose any possibility of education, but actually serve the political interests of motivated actors in the community. These textbooks, which frequently feature full color glossy pictures, charts, and maps, but contain a dearth of information, do not actually provide a full picture to students of their subject matter, and are designed more to convince school boards that are often captured by political actors to adopt them. As a result of needing to please political actors at the state level, they do not offer complete or controversial information, but are instead used to paint a pollyannaish view of the country, its history, politics and society. Kids therefore do not acquire the skills necessary to do any sort of critical thinking, and we are worse, as a society for it.
