Millennials, Generation Z, and others are reinventing what it means to be a working professional in today's modern economy. One may summarize this sentiment by saying, "they don't want to be managed; they want to be led."

People of all ages, but especially Millennials and Generation Z, want to have a sense of meaning and purpose in their jobs.

The modern workplace is all about giving workers more autonomy than they've ever had before. And their importance to the success of a company is greater than ever.

In this episode of The Gradience Podcast, Nigel is joined by Jay Fulcher, Operating Partner at Cheyenne Ventures.

They cover:

👉 [ 00:06:08 ] In the new world of work, millennials, Gen Z, and other generations are redefining how they show up in the workforce. In short, "they don't want to be managed; they want to be led"

👉 [ 00:06:39 ] Millennials, Gen Z, and other generations want to be inspired by their work, connect with the company, and have some noble purpose associated with it

👉 [ 00:08:53 ] The new world of work has to do with making sure that the employee is more empowered than they've ever been before. And that they are more central to a business's success than ever

👉 [ 00:08:59 ] If your leadership skills were reliant on ensuring you could physically see your employees in the office daily, you probably weren't much of a leader, to begin with. Whatever normal was before March of 2020, and for what it's worth, we're never going back. This is a new era in that we're in a new world of work

👉 [ 00:10:48 ] To adapt as a leader in the new world of work, you need to answer the following questions:
  • How will you build a network of support?
  • How do I proactively spend time maintaining and cultivating that network?
Furthermore, having places you can go to for advice and counsel and get your belief systems challenged priorities aligned to your goals is a healthy thing

👉 [ 00:14:49 ] As a founder or operational leader, i.e., someone with domain expertise and a mandate in a specific area of the business, you have to be conversant in all areas

👉 [ 00:15:40 ] To get the right people in the right jobs, you have to understand what that roadmap looks like and be able to anticipate the blind spots along the way, and make proper provisions for them

👉 [ 00:21:05 ] Hiring strategies have evolved over the past twenty-five to thirty years. Previously leaders "hire in their own image", i.e.:
  • Employees that looked like them
  • People they attended the same schools with
  • People with the same background as them

👉 [ 00:22:15 ] Most of the best companies now understand that hiring a diverse group of people can complement each other. As a leader, you must figure out how to find people with the skills and abilities that complement you, bringing out their strengths in the process

👉 [ 00:32:40 ] In today's competitive market, hiring people and providing them the autonomy they need to succeed is crucial. Those who will do the best work and provide the most value to your company don't want to be micromanaged daily or weekly. Find a rhythm, a manner of working that allows you to be close to the details and aware of what needs to be done but also provides them the breathing room they need to carry out their tasks effectively

If you’re interested in getting team-building tips from a successful founder, want a peek into being a founder in an unexplored niche, want to learn how to create an organic culture for your team, interested in knowing what it's like to be a founder in an unfamiliar industry, want to build a cross-functional team and a team with the right atmosphere, tune in to this episode of The Gradience Podcast, a Podcast by Build Talent.
