When we are young children, we don’t usually have a clear understanding of what is going on and how it may have a traumatic effect on us growing up. Childhood trauma happens when children are exposed to distressing or emotionally painful events. This can include events like actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. Childhood trauma not only occurs when a child experiences an event themselves but also when a child is exposed to traumatic events.
