VR Smalls served during the 1980's as a Navy Hospital Corpsman. This is a story that is absolutely heartbreaking to me, as well as inspirational. We talk about how VR decided to end her career after being stationed at a command where the commanding officer seemed to develop a particular type of interest in her career. VR also endured sexual harassment, denial of her pursuit to become an officer and more. Quickly losing morale her conduct deteriorated. We discuss what fears led her to decline re-enlistment as well as her transition out. VR shares how she ended up in New York, and what happened that caused her to abandon her dream of being on Broadway. I learn all about how that career change inadvertently led to her founding her not for profit the Veteran Women's Enterprise Center in Texas. Find out more below.
