Every parent wants the best for their child, and ensuring healthy physical development is a key aspect of their wellbeing. In this episode we speak with our Paediatric Physiotherapist Francyne Finlayson from Physiotherapy for Children. Fran works with children of all ages with movement and developmental difficulties to help them achieve their best functional outcomes.
We discuss:
  • The key aspects of a child's physical development that parents should be aware of
  • Fine motor and gross motor skills. What are they and what is the difference between the two?
  • As parents, what can we do to help our babies develop these gross motor skills?
  • How does muscle tone develop in children, and what role does it play in their overall physical wellbeing?
  • Common concerns that parents have regarding their child's physical development in the first few years of life
  • Children develop at their own pace but what are the red flags or warning signs that parents should be aware of when it comes to their child's motor development in the first few years of life?
  • We are told that tummy time and floor time is very important for our babies development. Why is this and do you have any tips for babies that don't like being placed on the floor?
  • How can parents ensure that play environments and activities promote their child’s physical development?
