A HERO is someone who does something special to HELP OTHERS. Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... And I Know that YOU Can Be a HERO TOO!

TCN Mornings Episode 236 - Wednesday, September 29, 2021

Good morning kids and parents! It’s a WEDNESDAY...the 29th day of September. And you know what today is? Today is National Attend Your Grandchild's Birthday Day. REALLY?! National Attend Your Grandchild's Birthday Day? Well, that’s great, but what if your grandchild doesn’t HAVE a birthday on September 29th? I have a DOZEN grandkids, and NONE of them has a birthday on September 29! Wait...I do have ONE whose birthday is on September 30th, so thanks for THAT reminder! But that’s not September 29th... Oh well, happy National Attend Your Grandchild's Birthday Day to you anyway!

And if YOU are somebody’s grandchild (and come to think of it, YOU ARE) and if YOUR birthday is today, September 29th, then HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! You share your birthday with somebody else...who by the way was somebody’s grandchild...but as far as I can tell, she never had children, so therefore, SHE never had grandchildren. Her name was Caroline Yale, and during her lifetime, she made a HUGE contribution to humanity...and more specifically to people who were HEARING IMPAIRED. Her story is called the Caroline Yale Story, and it starts right now.

The Caroline Yale Story

So, you heard in the story that Caroline had a strong desire to help children learn. What kinds of things are YOU motivated to do to help others? Also, Caroline worked hard in pursuit of finding a way to help children who could not hear very well or at all. Are YOU prepared to work hard to accomplish something that makes a positive difference in your own life and in the lives of others? And, finally, with Caroline, it all began with education...learning all that she could to build the foundation she would need to accomplish all that she did. How important is education to you? How important SHOULD it be? Just some things to think about on this Wednesday morning.

Well, just ahead, it’s another visit with my Old Irish Pappy... Also, the Question of the Day, and A Reflection of Your Future. It’s all just ahead on this Wednesday edition of TCN Mornings.

But right now, let’s talk about how we might provide these stories for YOUR school! You know, over the past 22 years, these stories have been played during morning announcements in hundreds of schools around the country. Each story is about 2-minutes in length, and they are typically played twice a week. A story from the Beginning of a Hero series on Tuesdays and a story from The Beginning of a Famous Hero Series on Thursdays. So, if you think YOUR school would like to participate, just have your Principal or Counselor write to jim.lord@TCNmornings.com. Or go to TCNmornings.com and click Membership.

WELL, Let’s jump right in and visit the memory of My Old Irish Pappy, a man just FULL of wisdom about life and how to live it better.

Yeah, don’t mess with other people’s stuff! Don’t touch it... don’t move it... don’t use it without the owner’s permission. That’s one way to live in peace with those around you! And you KNOW you don’t like it when someone else messes with YOUR stuff, right. Well, let’s always offer the OTHER person the same considerations we would like other people to give us. That makes sense to me!! How ‘bout to you?

Alright, so here we go on this Wednesday morning with the QUESTION OF THE DAY! We talked earlier about Caroline Yale, and the work she did to help hearing impaired students. Well, something that wasn’t mentioned was a man (an inventor) that she work with for a short time, and helped him in HIS work to help hearing impaired people and, in turn, he helped her as well. HE is actually well known for something else, but many people don’t realize that helping deaf people with his inventions was the basis of his entire life’s work. So, here’s your question: Who was this man, and what invention is he best known for? Who was this man, and what invention is he best known for?

If you know, email your answer to MYANSWER@TCNmornings.com. Tell us your first name, your city and state, and of course, your answer, and the first correct answer will be featured right here TOMORROW. That email address again is MYANSWER@TCNmornings.com.

Okay...SO...about yesterday’s question: Yesterday was National Read a Child a Book You Like Day, so, we had a question for you about that. Your question was: Why is it important to read to children on a regular basis?

Well, Li, (spelled Li) from Madison, Wisconsin says there are lots of reason that reading to small children is a very good thing, but one is when adults read aloud to their children, even when they are infants, they are helping build important reading skills, such as learning that text has meaning, developing new vocabulary, and learning that reading can be fun and enjoyable. Also, whether a child is 1 month old or 10 years old, reading together is a great way to bond and experience shared learning together. Wow, great answer, Li, so, thank you for that! Also, Li, many, MANY studies have shown that people who were read to on a regular basis as small children are MUCH better readers as adults than those who WEREN’T read to as children. So, yes, parents, reading regularly to your children is extremely important!

Okay, as usual, one more quick segment ahead, but as for me, I will see you tomorrow for the THURSDAY edition of TCN Mornings here on The Character Network..

Reflection:

Closer.

Dear Parents,

After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. Research has shown the TCN Method™ to be the single most effective school based Violence and Bully Prevention Intervention of its entire genre. We have hundreds of testimonials from educators describing the results they have gotten, and you can view many of these at www.TheCharacterNetwork.org/Testimonials

This program, The Beginning of a Famous Herois used in conjunction with a companion program called Bully Alert!in schools played over the intercom during morning announcements twice or more each school week, and backed up by a common culture which reinforces the principles taught, at every turn, and incorporates the phrases of the academic language during any teachable moment.

These two sets of stories work together to convey a common academic language which says, “A bully is a person who hurts others on purpose (even if it’s just hurting their feelings) but a HERO is a person who HELPS others. So CHOOSE to be a HERO by HELPING instead of a bully by hurting.”

They also promote the concept of POSITIVE PERSONAL VISION, helping each student to realistically visualize his or her own "Future Self," and in doing so help relate consequences of actions and attitudes today (good or bad) to that future self.

It is the spaced repetition of these principles that makes the program effective. It is the 100% turn-key presentation that makes it easy!

This program takes VIRTUALLY NO TIME (only 4 minutes a week!) away from classroom instruction. But it also provides a common language across the entire campus when teachable moments occur!

The TCN Method has been extraordinarily successful in the past, in almost a thousand schools all across America, from California to New York, with a special concentration all over Texas, where The Character Network is based, and has been used to the benefit of well over a million students across the past two decades.

Then Covid struck, with the majority of schools ceasing in classroom instruction altogether for the majority of the previous school year, and after years of successful growth, we found ourselves in the very difficult situation of having to rebuild almost from scratch. So we started a morning podcast to help make the principles and teachings of TCN available to kids to have at home… but we need help from parents like you to get the word out, and also to help us gather financial support to once again make the method available again to not just the schools we lost due to Covid, but to every school and every child who could benefit and needs this going forward.

We invite you to become a coworker with us on our mission. Please start by visiting us at www.Patreon.com/theCharacterNetwork and considering becoming a sponsor for this work, and then dropping us a line at info@thecharacternetwork.org so we can learn more about you. Thank you so much!
