El Instituto alemán Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft presenta el códec de video de nueva generación "H.266" o VCC (Versatile Video Codec), como una alternativa pensada para transmitir video en UHD, 4K y 8K.
Sus antecesores H.264 (2003) y 265 (2012) están vigentes y realizan un complemento muy bueno con su contenedor formato compresor de video "MP4". Siguen tan activos y actualizados que aún prestan servicio corriendo en diversos dispositivos y como códecs en los que se basan muchas plataformas de streaming. Pero el H.266 está pensado para proyectarse hacia el futuro en materia de mantener la calidad y ampliar el tamaño de los videos para streaming desde VGA hasta 8K.
