Dear Bellamy Black,
I am disabled and on the spectrum. I want to practice magic but I am struggling to focus my attention. I know meditation is really important, but I find I really struggle with turning my brain off and just being silent. When I research different magic methodologies I can only really find information for neurotypical brain types. While I am able to utilize some of these techniques I find most of them to be challenging at best. I was wondering if you had any insight on some good resources for a neurodivergent witch, such as myself. Its hard not seeing any resources readily available for someone like me. Am I not supposed to be a magical person?
In this heartfelt episode of "Ask a Witch with Bellamy Black," we address a deeply moving listener letter from a neurodivergent witch struggling to find resources and techniques that resonate with their unique way of experiencing the world. They expressed their struggles with focusing their attention, particularly with traditional meditation techniques that emphasize stillness and silence. They shared their frustration at the lack of resources tailored for neurodivergent individuals and questioned if they were meant to practice magic at all.
We explore the shamanic view of "mental illness" and how, in various cultures, behaviors seen as “disturbed” by Western standards are considered gifts. These behaviors are often viewed as blessings from the gods, enabling individuals to perceive the world through a unique and sacred lens. We discuss practical tools and methods for embracing magic with a brain that is always active. We discuss ways to harness and channel this constant mental activity into magical practices rather than fighting against it. And we highlight resources and communities that support neurodivergent witches. These include books, and practitioners who offer inclusive and adaptive approaches to magic. We offer reassurance that being neurodivergent does not preclude one from being a magical person. We emphasize that magic is for everyone, regardless of how their brain works, and celebrate the diverse ways in which people can connect with their magical practices.
Join us for this empowering episode as we validate the experiences of neurodivergent witches and offer practical advice for integrating magic into their lives. Remember, your unique perspective is a powerful asset in your magical journey!
