Manage episode 407504653 series 3561372
Join me for a conversation with author and scientist Ursula Goodenough. She is a professor emerita of biology at Washington University in St. Louis and is one of America’s leading cell biologists. She is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her book is titled “The Sacred Depths of Nature: How Life Has Emerged and Evolved. This is the second edition of the book which was originally published in 1997. Understanding mankind and our place on earth is the main topic covered in the book leading to questions such as “Why are people religious?” By looking at our relationship as humans to nature and what we have learned through the natural sciences, she explores our spiritual and religious desires. The book is written in a way that non-scientists and people in the arts and humanities can easily understand, exploring the origins of life and the universe. At the end of each chapter Goodenough concludes with a section of “reflections” celebrating the relationship of spiritual and religious meaning as they relate to science. She is a founder of The Religious Naturalist Association and has a Phd degree from Harvard.
There is an author talk and book signing at Maria’a bookshop, 960 Main Avenue on Tuesday Nov 7 at 6pm.
