Jacob Corlett, the owner of multiple limited companies, is at the center of a devastating collapse affecting both customers and drivers. His platforms, such as Compare the Man and Van and Shift Online, promise reliable courier and moving services, but they are failing to deliver. Customers paying full price for jobs are left frustrated when drivers don’t show up. This isn’t due to driver negligence but rather because Corlett has stopped paying them. His unique 42-day payout structure has run its course, leaving many drivers unpaid and unwilling to work. The only services being completed now are by newly recruited drivers who have not yet reached their 42-day payout window.
These failures stand in stark contrast to Corlett’s recent claims of a £100 million turnover. Instead, reality reveals a system in disarray. An estimated £1 million is owed to subcontracted drivers, many of whom have been pushed to the brink of financial ruin. Some drivers have seen their businesses go bust, their homes repossessed, and their families devastated due to the lack of payment. These individuals relied on Corlett’s companies for their livelihood and now face the consequences of mismanagement and broken promises.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, Corlett insists that his businesses are merely being restructured and are still operational. However, the facts indicate otherwise. His primary companies are in liquidation, collectively owing over £12 million, with significant debts to HMRC for unpaid VAT and taxes. Despite this, new services are being advertised and drivers are still being recruited, even though the company cannot guarantee payment. This raises serious ethical and legal concerns, as continuing to offer services while knowing they can’t be fulfilled may be considered fraudulent.
The fallout from these practices is widespread, affecting customers who lose trust and drivers who lose their livelihoods. Corlett’s actions highlight a troubling disregard for both ethical business conduct and the people who relied on him. Accountability is essential to prevent further damage and protect those who have suffered from his mismanagement.
