As of October 29, 2023, there have been 827 carjackings in Washington, DC. This is nearly three a day. In 2018, residents reported 140 carjackings, compared to 485 in 2022. DC crime data indicates there have been at least 113 arrests for carjackings so far this year, and 65% of those arrested are juveniles. D.C. has officially seen more than 200 homicides this year, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. When youth are sentenced they go into the care of The Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS) is the juvenile justice agency for the District of Columbia. Last week Councilman Trayon White held a press conference after seeing the living conditions of the youth at the facility at 1000 Mount Olivet Road in NE. One of the phases he used was “inhumane”. One would question how does these types of living conditions help rehabilitate the youth if they aren’t receiving the care they need?
