Have you ever been to Duluth, MN? Have you ever been to the Great Lakes in the upper Midwest? If you have, then you have seen the beauty, the power and the mystery they all have to offer. Of all the great lakes, one stands out the most, Lake Superior. Here are some crazy facts on Lake Superior, thanks to Carol Caputo of whose article appears here. It contains 10% of all planet Earth's fresh surface water It covers 82,000 sq km (31,700 sq mi) with an average depth of 147 metres or 483 feet The deepest point in the lake is 405 metres or 1,333 feet There have been about 350 shipwrecks recorded in Lake Superior and Lake Superior is known to not give up her dead. Over 10,000 lives have been lost in her waters Lake Superior is, by surface area, the largest lake in the world There is enough water in Lake Superior to cover all of North and South America with water one foot deep The average underwater visibility of Lake Superior is about 8 metres or 27 feet, making it the cleanest and clearest of the Great Lakes. Underwater visibility in some spots reaches 30 meters The dense basalts of Lake Superior acted like a wall or brake for the glaciers 18,000 years ago, which is why there is a driftless area in Wisconsin today Lake Superior has its own tide Lake Superior had a song written by Gordon Lightfoot called The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Don't be fooled by all these facts, because this episodes focuses on one theme...The sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. After the song I encourage you to read along with me. Click here to follow along and read this amazing article with me.
