Abraham Lincoln delivered his fabled 2nd inaugural address on March 4th, 1865. The Civil War had just ended and the nation was on the road to recovery when the future was rent asunder by an assassins bullet. Just a little over a month later, Lincoln would meet his end, to be succeeded by Andrew Johnson – a president considered one of (if not the) best, followed by one of (if not the) worst.
“With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”
