Listen in this morning as Chelsea & David bring you the second part of their conversation with the iconic Aboriginal writer, songman, and scholar, Uncle Joe Geia. Last week, we heard a bit about Uncle Joe’s early life, and his experience growing up in the shadow of the Protection Acts in so-called Queensland. This week, we learn more about what drives his writing and storytelling practice, and how music has served as a tool through which he can observe, document and honour the power, resistance, and beauty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Through anecdotes from his life as a musician, and his own memories of his formative years in the land rights movement here in so-called queensland, Uncle Joe talks a bit about the role of music in movements for justice, and the way that music shaped his own relationship to Black struggle. Chelsea and David get front row seats as Uncle Joe shares live performances of two incredible songs – Uncle Willie & Brisbane Blacks – and the stories behind them, both of which reflect his commitment to honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community leaders, and to telling the truth about the ongoing struggle for survival, sovereignty, and self-determination.

So find a comfy spot and listen back to this masterclass in respecting and honouring #BlackHumanity, and finding pride and power in Black Knowing.
