“The philosophy of Mesoamerica – the indigenous groups of precolonial North-Central America is rich and varied but relatively little – known”, are the opening words of Alexus McLoed’s book An Introduction to Mesoamerican Philosophy. Indeed, while we, here in Western Europe, may have a fairly good conception of Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, the Mesoamerican pendant is neither in our school curriculum nor has it entered our daily lives in the form of habits such as Buddhist meditation practices, for example, have. This is why it is all the more important that we expand our horizons and learn about another ancient wisdom tradition. To shift our Eurocentric focus and move away from the conception of European “uniqueness” is the goal of today’s Wisdom talk. To guide us through the history and intricacies of Mesoamerican Philosophy, we spoke to Alexus McLeod, Professor of Religious Studies at Indiana University. Alexus McLeod has written a number of books on Mesoamerican and Chinese philosophy where he takes a global approach to philosophical issues and methodologies as well as investigates multiple global traditions.

"Die Philosophie Mesoamerikas - der indigenen Gruppen des vorkolonialen Nord- und Mittelamerikas - ist reich und vielfältig, aber relativ wenig bekannt", heißt es zu Beginn des Buches An Introduction to Mesoamerican Philosophy von Alexus McLoed. In der Tat, während wir hier in Westeuropa eine recht gute Vorstellung von der antiken griechischen und römischen Philosophie haben, steht das mesoamerikanische Pendant weder in unseren Lehrplänen, noch hat es in Form von und Praktiken Eingang in unser tägliches Leben gefunden, wie zum Beispiel die buddhistische Meditation. Umso wichtiger ist es, dass wir unseren Horizont erweitern und eine weitere alte Weisheitstradition kennen lernen. Das Ziel des heutigen Weisheitsgesprächs ist es wieder einmal, unseren eurozentrischen Fokus zu verschieben und uns von der Vorstellung der "Einzigartigkeit" Europas zu lösen. Um uns durch die Geschichte und die Feinheiten der mesoamerikanischen Philosophie zu führen, sprachen wir mit Alexus McLeod, Professor für Religionswissenschaften an der Indiana University. Alexus McLeod hat eine Reihe von Büchern über mesoamerikanische und chinesische Philosophie geschrieben, in denen er einen globalen Ansatz zu philosophischen Fragen und Methoden verfolgt und mehrere globale Traditionen untersucht.
