2024 was the warmest year on record in Moscow’s entire history of meteorological observations. According to Moscow State University’s meteorological observatory, the average annual air temperature reached 8.2°C (46.8°F), the newspaper Kommersant reported on Tuesday.
Ten months of 2024 were significantly warmer than usual. The hottest month was September, with an average temperature of 17.9°C (64.2°F), which is 5.7°C (10.3°F) above the norm. The same month also saw record sunshine, totaling 263 hours.
Throughout 2024, eight daily high temperature records were broken in Russia’s capital: February 29, March 31 through April 3, July 3, September 13, and November 22. The temperature exceeded 30°C (86°F) on nine occasions: from June 29 to July 5 and on July 14 and 15.
The start of 2024 did not betray the coming heat: the weather was abnormally cold from January 2 to 8.
