Farmers on the Water: You dropped the SALT BOMB on me!
Manage episode 438326840 series 3435843
Welcome to Season 4 of the Made of Savannah Podcast!
Laura and Perry Solomon are the hearts, hands and minds responsible for creating the first floating oyster farm in Georgia. The Tybee Oyster Company is a full-on family operation bringing a deeper - and delicious - meaning to being "Georgia Grown".
Born and raised on Tybee Island, Perry's family has been there for six generations - his grandfather even took the train (The Marsh Hen) back and forth to school in Savannah. He says a big part of his childhood was "enjoying the bounties of the sea" with his family. As Laura and Perry traveled with the Navy, they watched the oyster industry evolve and grow in other states and wondered why it wasn't happening in Georgia. So, they took it in their hands ... for real!
As far as the growing process: You've likely heard about - and maybe even had the pleasure of eating - the Salt Bombs. These oysters are grown at the mouth of the Bull River within sight of the Atlantic Ocean. They are cultivated in floating baskets where they are polished and shaped by the brisk current and high energy wave action rolling-in off Wassaw Sound.
They all begin as seed provided by the UGA Oyster Hatchery on the Skidaway River, right here in Savannah.
Mark your calendars to celebrate National Oyster Day at Savannah's inaugural raw bar event, the "Georgia Oyster Revival" November 10th at Starland Yard.
