The LSU Tigers hit the field at Tiger Stadium on Saturday afternoon in front of fans, recruits, and former players in the 2024 Spring Game. While it is difficult, and frankly irresponsible, to take too much away from a spring scrimmage before the spring transfer portal even opens, the Tigers showed us enough to be able to react to the progress that Brian Kelly's squad is making ahead of the season debut in Las Vegas against the USC Trojans.

First, QB Garrett Nussmeier looks like he is ready to take on the QB1 role in a physical and mental capacity. The defense couldn't hit the quarterbacks, but even still Nussmeier was able to show off his arm and poise in the pocket with two long touchdown passes, one to potential breakout star Kyren Lacy for a 59 yard connection and the other to Mississippi State transfer Zavion Thomas for a 45 yard bomb.

However, the story of the offense looking explosive is not complete without considering the other side of the ball. The Tigers' defense was bad in every single statistical category in the 2023 season and Saturday afternoon was not much of an exception. The secondary busted coverages on several occasions and even in a rather simple scheme the defensive backs looked confused. There is still plenty of time and a lot of work to be done before the beginning of the season, but new defensive coordinator Blake Baker will have his work cut out for him to improve the LSU defense.
