Everything Takes Time Not Every Business is the Same There is Value in Every Creative Ventures One Idea Leads to Many Others Success isn't Just About Numbers Want to know this episode in a quick summary? You know I've always got you! Real Talk: Running an online shop is not a set it and forget it business model. Though parts of it can be self sustaining - ie your products can sync automatically with your print partner or organic SEO can benefit a shop more + more over time - it’s important to keep your shop current and active, no matter where you are selling. Know that, if there was a tried and true way to make a lot of money, a lot of people would do that task. There are people who do start print on demand businesses and hit the ground running. There are authors that write one book and can live off it the rest of their loves. There are, I assume, musicians from the 1900s who are able to live off one hit wonders. Most people do not have this experience. I don’t meant this in a negative way - I mean it in that, if your growth is slow, that is totally normal. Your business - whether it’s a side business or full-time business - is going to evolve and change over time and that includes growth. Personally, I think the worst thing I see about Print on Demand - and selling on most platforms in general - is to follow trends. I’ll say it a million times: I love a trend. Here's what we'll be chatting about! Your Designs Are Going to Suck at First It's Okay if Your Designs Aren't Great! Listing Products Helps With Growth Sometimes, Bad Designs Sell! " When you start Print on Demand, there is a LOT to learn. You need to learn the platform you’re selling on, you need to learn what you like to design and, most importantly, you need to learn how to design. And when that’s done? Does it mean that you should be embarrassed of what you’re creating. Absolutely not! I think it means the exact opposite: Get started! Because your designs? They’re probably going to suck. It might just be the first ten. It might just be the first hundred. Or it might be the first thousand. Whatever it is, that’s okay! In any creative - or honestly just business - field, it is very common to hear stories of success. Those stories are incredible and so inspiring, too! But! Just because someone else had things click immediately, it doesn’t mean every seller will. What we can do, though, is pay attention to what works for our individual shops over time. "Often, we see print on demand recommended as a side hustle or a way to leave your desk job. What if you want something different? As a longtime photographer, I knew two things: I Wanted to Diversify My Income I Didn’t Want to Stop Shooting Yes! I wanted to diversify but I also didn’t want to leave my career. While I’ve never had a traditional desk job, leaving my job was never something I wanted. Instead, I wanted to supplement my income in a different way. Personally, I set out to design a few photographer shirts. Instead, I ended up with two enormous Etsy shops. And it’s been fantastic! I feel so strongly that any creative - a designer, a painter, an illustrator, a photographer, a writer - can take print on demand and use it an a way to fit into their career. Maybe for one person that’s creating tote bags with your paintings. Maybe for another it’s a huge shop full of items with witty phrases. I also recommend testing on one marketplace - typically a platform like Etsy - to see what gets clicks and what doesn’t. While selling is the ultimate goal, all data is good data. While data is definitely impacted by things like keywords, once you get your shop up and running, you’ll have repeat buyers. Sometimes, I think I’ve crushed a design and no one clicks on it. I've got you! Think of it like this: If you like designing, you’d be doing it anyway. While I don’t think that every shop needs thousands of listings to be successful, I do think scaling your work is a great way to practice your design skill set, practice your listings, and even practice the way you create mockups and research keywords. You do not need to build your shop in a day and you are not a failure if it takes you years to build your shop up to what you want. This is normal!
