In Working with a generous God, Rick considers the gospel of Mark, chapter 6 verses 30 to 44. This is the famous passage describing when Jesus miraculously provides for the crowd – ‘the feeding of the 5000’. In the message, Rick covers five key themes. God’s generosity – The miracle demonstrates that God not only provides but does so abundantly, as seen in the leftover baskets of food. Faith in Action – The disciples doubted at first, but Jesus involved them in the miracle by asking them to distribute the food. Hardness of Heart – The disciples failed to grasp the full significance of Jesus’ provision, as later shown when they struggled during a storm and did not connect it with the previous miracle (Mark 6:50-52). Practical Application – Rick encourages us to trust in God’s provision, step out in faith with what they have, and develop a heart that expects God’s generosity in daily life. Modern Examples – Rick references George Müller, a Christian evangelist known for his faith-based provision for orphans, emphasizing the power of specific prayers and trusting in God’s provision. Mark 7 is an account of a time when the Pharisees criticised Jesus’ disciples for not washing their hands before eating – but not because they were concerned about hygiene; the Pharisees’ concern was about religious tradition rather than true obedience to God. Jesus calls them hypocrites, quoting Isaiah, and pointing out that they prioritise human traditions over God’s commandments. External rituals do not make a person pure or impure; rather, it is what comes from the heart—evil thoughts and actions—that truly defile someone. This teaching shifts the focus from outward religious practices to inner transformation and righteousness.
