Rising Brisbane metalcore outfit UNI/VS have remained quiet over the COVID period, resisting the temptation to mass produce music during lockdown, instead focusing their efforts into releasing a series of stand out tracks as the world returns to normalcy rather than saturate an increasingly crowded market.
Following their 2020 single Hellhound, UNI/VS readied themselves for an East Coast Tour which was to be followed by their first international show in Sweden before the cruel hand of China stepped in.
The band are back, armed with their first new music in almost two years in the form of Saboteur, an intense and aggressive track that aims to teach us that it is okay to not be okay.
Bass player Shaq Schmidt joined HEAVY to discuss the track.
"Musically... we don't necessarily start out trying to write something heavy or something soft,” he measured. “Most of the time it might just start with a bit of a riff idea and the main riff of Saboteur is really how it started and it evolved from there. Probably a big part of what makes it sounds heavy is the lyrical content and Scott's style of vocals. I guess it all really evolved off the main riff in the song."
In the full interview Shaq talks about the film clip and how it relates to the song, why it took them two years to follow up Hellhound, future music and its direction, dealing with COVID, future plans and more.
