Jesus was in Jerusalem during His passion week and was burdened to help His disciples have a right perspective about the future. As they left the temple mount and walked to the Mount of Olives, His disciples remarked on the grandeur of Herod’s temple that was about completed. Jesus exhorted them not be preoccupied with temporal buildings that would soon be destroyed, but to watch and be ready for the coming of the Lord. He detailed that events of the tribulation (13:5-13), the great tribulation (13:14-23) and His glorious second coming (13:24-27). The rapture of the church is not in view in this passage. This powerful message from Christ looks beyond the church age and its rapture to the tribulation where God will resume His work with Israel. Jesus concluded with a timeless application for all of God’s people, “And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”
