The Apostle John uses a phrase three times in his writings to refer to the nature of God. In1 John 1:5 he makes this declaration: This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.The message he heard and proclaimed was the message of the coming of the Son, the Word into the world. John was his earest disciple along with Andrew and he bears witness to Jesus. This theme is also stated in John chapter 1, He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The basic truth of the statement, God is light is that in God is absolute moral purity, absolute purity. The context of John's use is contrast between people's walk in darkness, sin and God the pure, holy altogether righteous One.Later the Apostle Paul will use this language of light bearing to refer to Christian witness and living as children of light.
