Return and the King

God will discipline and judge all evil

Immanuel the “sign” (Isa 7:14)

New Davidic King, new creation (Isa 9,11)

The highway back to God- New Exodus (Isa 35)

A heavenly feast and the defeat of death (Isa 25)

  1. NT hidden in the OT, OT manifest in the NT HS author Augustine

XII. 4 Sense of Scripture, highlight the Christological sense

How does prophesy work? What about fulfillments? The New Exodus or Immanuel?

As Christians, look at prophecy looking backwards from vantage point of Christ. St. Paul says all of the promises of God are Yes in Him, in Christ.

2 Cor 1:20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.

Looking back from Christ we always see the Christ is the ultimate and most perfect fulfillment of all of God’s promises and oracles.

But if we start off from the time of the prophet and his audience, we see there is more than one fulfillment, usually partial fulfillment at the beginning

>>Thinking about the New Exodus, Jesus is our new Passover Lamb the NT says. In Him our exodus is perfect because not just leads His people from one geographical location to another. But leads us out of sin & through our wilderness and pilgrimage in this life to our perfect & eternal home in heaven with Him.

This is the truest and greatest fulfillment that promise of the new Exodus to save God’s people.

And yet, if there isn’t a little fulfillment of before with people actually geographically return from their exile and rebuild the Temple then all of the places in the OT where it says God fulfilled His promise to bring us back

We want to say yes to both. Yes to first partial fulfillment then yes in a big way in to the second.

This will orient us to reading prophecy and seeing double fulfillments as we move along in the rest of the prophets. Especially in our next video in Isaiah look at this promises of the suffering servant and return of (God?) To Zion.

All promises find Yes in God. Longing for His return. Partial fulfillment, waiting, suffering God is with us in midst of our longing for Him to come back.

XIII. Suffering Servant innocent but suffers penalty with/for the people, partial fulfillment with prophets or other figures King Hezekiah

The Suffering Servant

Isaiah 49-50

The “Servant” is a light to Israel and to the nations, anointed by God’s Spirit

He entrusts his right to God, though beaten by enemies and mocked by friends

He embodies the people and suffers with him, though he is innocent

Isaiah 52-53

The Servant’s suffering, though none understood it, is an acceptable offering to God for the people

The innocent Servant will be victorious on the other side of death and share the spoils with others

What is a messiah? The Bible itself says Cyrus is a messiah, does this undermine our confidence in Jesus? No, it doesn’t undermine our confidence in Jesus.

Messiah= anointed Greek word, chrió: to anoint, Christos Christ, someone anointed with oil in the Name of God. Lots of them in SS. All of the kings are anointed in Israel and Judah. Priests are anointed. Prophets are anointed.

People are anointed for a particular task. To say someone is a messiah does NOT imply divinity. Usually, they are the king or anointed as priest or for a particular task for God.

Cyrus is NOT THE MESSIAH in the sense he is the single great Savior of God or that he is the Lord. He has a particular job to do God is giving him even though Cyrus does not know God. Kings are not anointed to be priests; they are anointed to be kings and do that job. Prophets just anointed to that job, preach.

In the history of ancient Israel there was growing expectation of one particular messiah among many people that he was the one that God had spoken of this new Davidic king who would come. It is that fulfillment we find in JC. JC is the anointed king to rule over His people in justice to save them from sin and the powers of evil and lead us to everlasting life. JC is THE Christ. All of us have a small anointing in JC because we are Baptized in Him and Confirmed anointed in fact with the oil Chrism in the name of God. We are marked with God’s blessing for the task of being His people and His witnesses in the world.

Invitation to be suffering servants ourselves. Following the steps of the Master.
