This week on the show Alyssa and Haley are chatting with adventurer and multi record-breaking athlete Quinn Brett. Quinn grew up as a competitive swimmer, and she dabbled in road triathlon before finding her love for outdoor adventures sports like mountain running, climbing and off-road triathlon. In 2017 while climbing El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, Quinn fell over 100 feet and suffered a spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She talks about how this life-changing injury has impacted the ways in which she is able to recreate in the outdoors, and how it has inspired her to advocate for people with disabilities to have better access to public lands. Quinn works for the National Parks Service, and after her injury she became the organizations first ever Wilderness Accessibility Coordinator. She describes her role, and talks about what we all can do to ensure both access and sustainability of public lands remains a priority for many years to come.

As an athlete and lover of outdoor adventure, Quinn has taken up hand cycling since her injury, and enjoys getting out on the trails in her home state of Colorado. In the summer of 2021 she became the first documented hand cyclist to complete the Tour Divide, a 30,000 mile ride that follows the Continental Divide through the US from the Canadian border in the north, all the way to the Mexican border in the south. She completed the route in an impressive 25 days, and she tells us about all that went into the planning and preparation to make the trip happen, including some impressive at-home research & development to build the perfect hand cycle to take her over the grueling route.
