37:24Good intentions often fail our kids and sometimes act as an excuse we hide behind. Good intentions are like something that looks great on paper but fails miserably when applied to reality. The responsibility and calling on us as dads is too great to approach it with only good intentions. If we mean well but are ignorant and unintentional, we will let our children down. We cannot allow that to happen. I am calling out our attempts to father exclusively with good intentions and providing a remedy that will bring us success in fatherhood. There are two things we should be concerned about and focused on, instead of having good intentions, that will make a much greater impact on our kids — preparation and relationships. — Get your copy of the new devotional for dads, Following Our Father: https://amzn.to/4eYIc1Q Get your free gift, a copy of Cut The Crap (E-book): https://fatheringourfuture.com/2024/08/04/free-download-for-new-dads/ Become a financial partner with Fathering Our Future and make a direct impact on dads: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

22:55Christmas may truly be the most wonderful time of the year. For us as Christians, it is a time where we heavily reflect upon the birth of our savior, Jesus. We focus on giving, joy, and love which was modeled to us by Christ, but there is something about Christmas that is most important for us to grasp as dads. In Matthew 1:23, we read that a virgin will conceive, birth a son, and his name will be called Emmanuel, which means God with us. As we reflect upon the birth of Christ, we should be captivated by the fact that God was with us. This incredible point ought to be what we model as dads. No matter where our kids end up and no matter what they may find themselves dealing with, they should always know that dad is with them.

25:32Fatherhood is no easy journey and it does not get easier when you decide to be intentional and engaged. Being a dad continues to grow complicated as things change and you start new practices. All of the changes and newness can easily make you want to quit. Today, I want to encourage you to not despise your small beginnings. The start is almost always the most challenging but fatherhood is a challenge worth sticking with. Whether you are a new dad, new to being intentional, or starting a new practice around something such as discipline (which I personally discuss in the episode), I want you to be encouraged to stick with it and not count yourself out just because of the slowness and smallness of your beginning. — Get your copy of the new devotional for dads, Following Our Father: https://amzn.to/4dtGfKD Get your free gift, a copy of Cut The Crap (E-book): https://fatheringourfuture.com/2024/08/04/free-download-for-new-dads/ Become a financial partner with Fathering Our Future and make a direct impact on dads: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

31:44When we read through wisdom literature in the Bible one thing becomes clear, we do not want to be fools. The fool does not have a great ending and there are a plethora of negative sentiments made about the fool. However, Proverbs 29:20, tells us that the person who speaks quickly, without thinking, has less hope than a fool. How we speak matters. As dads it is easy to speak quickly to our children to serve ourselves and convenience. This is usually done by forming assumptions, trying to display our superiority, and forecasting. 1:09:08One of the most common pieces of advice given from super successful individuals is bet on yourself. We have to believe that what we are doing is meaningful and that we have a purpose that is worth pursuing even through failures. But there is a reason the super successful individuals are a minority, most people give up on themselves. I am joined today by my friend and executive director of Manhood Journey, Kent Evans, who recognized this issue and wrote a book to combat it. The book is titled, Don’t Bench Yourself, and it is designed to motivate and encourage you to value yourself and stay in the game of life. Kent and I discuss the book, what it means to not quit on yourself, why that is important, and how you can keep moving forward through adversity. While running and exercise are great choices for us, that is not what today’s episode is about. In Luke 15, Jesus paints a picture of his identity by telling us a story of a dad with two sons. Most of the time we get focused on the prodigal, but our focus should be on the dad. The dad in this story has a son that acted selfishly and foolishly, and another who stayed quiet and stuck around. However, in the time both of these sons had issues and struggles, the father went out to them. As dads, we are not supposed to wait around for our children to come to us whenever they have questions, struggles, or failures. We are supposed to run to them in their time of need in order to be what they need us to be. Again, I would love if you exercised, but today I hope to convince you that you need to be the one going to your kids in their time of need.

36:36Children are gifts from God but unfortunately we live in a world where predators wait in the shadows. While most of us think it could never happen to our children, there are things we simply do not know. The sad reality is that one in five boys and one in three girls are victims of sexual abuse, and the abuse typically begins between the ages of 3 and 5. As dads devoted to serving our children and being what they need, we must take the steps necessary to protect them from sexual abuse. I am joined today by Vanessa Morris, Communications Director at The Foundation United, to talk about childhood sexual abuse. We discuss blind spots of parents, the dangers of smart devices, but most importantly we talk about communicating with your children to create a space of safety and protection. “Can you help me,” may be the most unspoken phrase by men, but it shouldn’t be. If we want to thrive as fathers and be the dads our children need us to be, we need to ask for help. In order to do this, we need people in our lives that we can ask for help. This week’s episode is committed to showing you that good dads ask for help and surround themselves with community. We were designed by God to live within relationships, not isolation. With the help of the Bible, an inspirational story, and some personal testimonies of my own, I want to convince you and convict you to show yourself friendly, live in community, and ask for help on this journey called fatherhood.

33:04As Christian dads, the greatest influence in our lives should be God and the Bible. Every aspect of our lives, from work to family, should be influenced by scripture. This is important for us, but it is also going to be important for our children. One day our children will grow up and venture off on their own. Will they be rooted enough in God’s word to navigate life and withstand the challenges? We are instructed to bring our children up in the training and the instruction of the Lord. We are also instructed to impress the scriptures on them regularly. 29:35We live in an extravagant culture in America. We often think the bigger, the better. In Texas, we even boast that everything is bigger, implying that it is also better. While sometimes this is true, it is so easy for us, as dads, to believe this all the time. We work and aspire for the things that are great. We aim to plan huge trips and vacations. We focus on getting the biggest gifts we can find and spending tons of money on things that others deem valuable. We often forget how impactful the little things are. I was reminded of this when I picked my kids up from Sunday School on the morning of Father’s Day 2024. They each filled out a sheet about me, including one section that recorded their favorite memory with me. When I read their answers I was reminded of how significant the small things are. I want to share their answers with you and remind you how important the little things are to your children. One of the worst things we can do as dads is roam through life aimlessly. If we are going to find fulfillment, we must have values in our lives that drive us forward to goals and meaningful achievements. Values guide us and determine how we respond to situations. Like Jesus, starving in the wilderness being tempted by the devil, we must stay true to what matters. In this episode, you will learn what your top three values must be as a Christian dad and what that means for you. You’ll also learn how you go about forming values for yourself. Lastly, we will talk about commitment and a practical tip to implement on the device we all struggle to put down.

As a dad, one of your greatest concerns and pursuits is time with your family. Like everyone else you turn your attention to what is known as work-life balance. What if I told you that was not the right place to start? What if immediately pursuing work-life balance is putting the cart ahead of the horse? I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this and I have come to realize the idea of work-life balance is misguiding. What we want is freedom and time with our family. We analyze our lives, which often feel overly chaotic, and we work on bringing order to what is. Even if you are herald as the to-do list king, you are likely still struggling to obtain what you are striving for. In this episode, I provide the starting point for you to obtain what you truly desire and it is not a how-to on balancing your life and your work. There is an evaluation to perform and a question to consider before you make a move. Start here, and you’ll be on the path to get more time with your family. — JOIN THE WAITLIST! 20:50Change is one of those things we can talk about but typically hate to experience. We are creatures of habit and we enjoy the comfort that comes with the familiar and consistent. Well, my family and I made a big change and moved to a new house. The move was something I was against for a while and my oldest was not too thrilled about it either. Through the process of moving, three things stood out to me that I feel are important for dads to know. One specifically deals with making a move that impacts your children and the other two are relevant for any change that happens in your life. These lessons will help you connect further with your kids, understand your true value, and turn your fear of the unknown into hopeful expectation. — JOIN THE WAITLIST! 19:36A very common piece of advice that I see given to dads is, “Be the dad you wish you had.” Depending on who hears this, this suggestion may resinate, but it is not right. As dads, our devotion is to our children and we should be focused on their needs. If our focus is on the pain of our past and what we wish we would have had, we can very easily miss what is right in front of us. This week’s episode is dedicated to bringing a corrective to this advice and illuminating what our pursuit as dads should be. Whether your dad was absent, negligent, awful, or amazing, your dad is not the one you should be looking to as a reference point for yourself. But, I’ll tell you who is. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

25:50Our mission as Christian dads is to equip and disciple our children to be a part of God’s mission in a greater capacity than ourselves. In order to achieve this, we must have influence with our kids. We can only have influence if we have a relationship with them, but there will be no relationship without communication. As we focus on communication with our children, there are additional benefits that come with this. I want you to place an emphasis on communication as a dad, so I want to make sure you are aware of the benefits that come along with this discipline. There are benefits for you and for your children that improve success, respect, and relationships. 19:16As dads, we do a lot of teaching. We guide our kids through multiple areas of life, providing experience and wisdom every day. While we are the prominent teacher as the dad, there is something our children teach us and we need to pay attention to it. In Mark 10, we read where Jesus expresses the importance and value of being like little children. When it comes to faith, prayer, and how we approach God, our children model what we should be doing. I want to encourage you to learn from your children when it comes to thinking about God because growth and maturation often cause us to view God through a different lens than children. And the lens our children use, is the right lens. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

28:31Imagine how convenient it would be if every time you asked your kid to do something they obeyed. You never had to worry about uproars in restaurants or meltdowns anywhere else in public. Your kids just obeyed you all the time. Don’t let your imagination run too rampant because there is no fail-proof way to guarantee that. However, we do have biblical guidance on how we can increase the likelihood of our children obeying us. In Ephesians 6, Paul addresses children obeying and honoring their parents and in conjunction to that, speaks instruction to fathers to help their children fulfill the commandment of obedience. On this episode, I unpack what Paul says to dads about provoking their children to anger, and what we should do instead to help our children obtain the promise attached to obedience. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…
What is a dad? While it may seem like a basic and fundamental question, there isn’t always a clear cut answer. Some may allude to a dad being an ultimate authority and others compare dads to coaches. Some define a dad simply by the tasks he performs or should perform. I don’t see how any of those definitions could be right. When I consider the Bible and God, who is our Father, I see a much different portrayal of what a dad is. In this week’s episode, I layout my understand and definition of a dad to help us understand what makes us stand apart. Having this understanding provides clarity and illuminates the path we can follow to grow, improve, and become the dad our children need us to be. — If you’re interested in learning more about my upcoming devotional and would like a sneak peak inside, click here: https://fatheringourfuture.com/2024/06/09/following-our-father-sneak-peak/ — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

21:13Luke 15 may be the most moving and inspirational passage of the Bible for men on the topic of fatherhood but it can also be one of the most confusing. We read of a father who gives his younger son his inheritance early. I’m not sure I know a dad alive today who would be willing to do that. So why did this father? I want to talk to you about your motivations as a dad. I’m sure there are things you do as a dad that you’ve probably never considered why you do them. You likely have rules for your kids, but are those rules really for their benefit? We are going deep today to get to the heart of the matter and discover our intent and motivation for why we do what we do as dads. Because what we do should be less about us and more about our children. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

14:00I want to discuss something that affects each and every one of us: our past. All of those experiences we often try to sweep under the rug that end up shaping us more than we realize. We are looking at the story of Joseph but focusing on another character, his dad, Jacob. Jacob's favoritism towards Joseph, born from his own unresolved issues, led to a whole mess of trouble for Joseph and his brothers. This biblical story is one that sadly continues to repeat itself but we often overlook it. Facing our past isn't exactly a walk in the park but ignoring it won't make it disappear. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it's time we courageously begin the journey to deal with our stuff. Jacob's story isn't just a history lesson; it's a cautionary parable. His unresolved bitterness seeped into every aspect of his family life, wreaking havoc for generations. If you're coasting along, feeling the weight of your own past, I'm here to tell you: you're not alone. Whether it's a trusted friend or a professional counselor, there's help out there. And trust me, asking for it doesn't make you any less of a man—it makes you better. So, Christian dads, let's do ourselves and our families a favor: let's confront our past, break free from its grip, and pave the way for a brighter future. Because our kids deserve dads who aren't weighed down by yesterday's baggage. Do you want to be happy? According to an expert at Yale there is something that happy people have in common. It is also something that the Bible makes very clear to us: community. And it's not just about having acquaintances; it's about forging real connections, having people to share life's ups and downs with. As Christian dads, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle of life, to isolate ourselves in the middle of our responsibilities. But we weren't meant to go it alone. From Adam in the garden to Elijah in the wilderness, the message is clear: we need each other. So, in this episode, I'm sharing some practical strategies to cultivate community. From joining church groups to hosting game nights, there are multiple ways to connect with like-minded individuals. Notice I said, “like-minded,” not “same-minded.” Too often we remove ourselves from others because they are not exactly like us. I hate to break it to you, you want find many just like you. However, there is biblical guidance for building community even when there are differences. So if you find yourself struggling to make friends and finding yourself down in the dumps a lot, let me help you by showing building community doesn’t have to be that challenging. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

23:16As we approach Mother’s Day we may find ourselves rattling our brains to find the perfect gift for our wives. While it is important for us to get something material, the greatest thing we can give is immaterial; our time. In this episode, I focus on a crucial aspect of our roles as Christian fathers: prioritizing our wives. From Ephesians 5, we learn that husbands are called to emulate Christ's sacrificial love for His bride. It's about more than just being present—it's about giving our entire selves to our wives, which requires our time. By making this commitment, we not only fulfill our marital vows but also find a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment. But why is this so important? Well, aside from nurturing a strong marriage, our actions serve as a tangible representation of Christ's love to our children. When they witness our reverence and honor towards our wives, they gain invaluable insights into healthy relationships and the character of Christ Himself. Our time commitment to our wives benefits her, us, and our children. Whether it's scheduling regular date nights or simply being fully present in conversations, every effort contributes to strengthening our marriages and enriching our family dynamics. I want you to be encouraged to commit time to your wife every day and grant her the gift of experiencing a God-designed marriage. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

22:26When should we forgive our children? No one enjoys being wronged, and no one easily forgets the injustices committed against them. We tend to hold on to those acts, especially when they are committed by the ones closest to us, and even more so when they come from our children. Should we wait until we feel they understand our pain? Should we hold off because we think we need to teach them a lesson? At what point do we forgive our kids? The Bible provides us with insight into how we should go about forgiveness. We have more than God’s example and how He forgives us; we also have an example of a father who was wronged by his son. While it never feels good to be hurt, disrespected, or wronged, there is a path we should choose when it comes to forgiving our children that might not always come naturally. – For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

It sounds crazy, but it is true. So many of us fall into this category of people who just want to know what to do. We do not have a desire to guess or to make mistakes. We want someone to tell us exactly the best way to go about whatever we want to do and then we just want to do that. Fortunately, there is a right way, but it is not what you think. It is not a path that has defined parameters. It is not 3-step program that gets you to "greatest dad in the world" status. The right way for you to do fatherhood, deals with you. 41:54Some people like to keep a tight leash on there kids, metaphorically and sometimes literally, but is that the right way to go about parenting? Should we be so protective that we chart out every step our children will take, ultimately controlling what they do? Of course the motivation for this is good intention, but does that make control, sheltering, and being over-protective acceptable? A friend of mine sent me a podcast episode about children having more independence and asked for my thoughts. While the information shared in the episode was interesting, I approach this from a different angle utilizing a scripture we hear often as Christian fathers and parents, Proverbs 22:6. "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." I want to help understand what Proverbs 22:6 means and what it does not mean. In our world today, love may be one of the most abused terms. It is taken to justify things it would never stand for. It is used as reasons for things it would never partake in. Love is misunderstood and misused. After a month of interviews focusing on love, I wanted to recap some requirements, or demands, of love so that we understand what love is and what love is not. If what we call love fails to have the required components, then what we call love is not love at all. Additionally, I add a corrective to the mentality we should have when it comes to love. It is very easy for us to inject selfishness into the equation of love, but we have to remember that it is not about us. Our children need affirmation from us. Joining me to talk about affirmation and its impact, is Dr. Eugene Wilson. Eugene is an expert in leadership shares how we, as leaders in our home, can use our voice to build up our children. You'll learn how to speak words of affirmation to your children and when to do it. 19:44In Matthew 25, we read about servants who stewarded what was given to them with diligence and wisdom. They were later described as good and faithful servants. As dads, we have been entrusted with priceless gifts and I believe we should also strive to be good, faithful, and servants. Being good can be subjective but I’ll give you a definition and question to constantly ask yourself to make sure what you are doing is good. Faithfulness is usually tied to religion and marriage but there is also an application in reference to fatherhood that we must understand. Lastly, there is an understanding of servanthood that isn’t popular but as leaders to our children and in our homes, it is essential for us to embrace. If we want to do well as dads, we need to pursue being good, faithful, and servants. -- For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

33:14Reflecting on the iconic speech of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I was inspired to craft my own version for dads. I have a dream for Christian dads because I believe we have a divine calling with this identity we are blessed to bear. I believe dads make a difference. The stronger we are, the more committed we are, the more knowledgeable we are, and the more connected we are, the greater the difference we make. We cannot allow small setbacks to drive us off course, we must be devoted to the call, and I believe we can do it. In addition to my dream for dads, I have a dream to share with you about Fathering Our Future. It may be a podcast at this present time, but it is going to grow into so much more. I want to share the origin of Fathering Our Future and why I started it. I also want you to know future plans and I want to give you an opportunity to be a part of what is going to happen. Here is what you can think about and consider as you listen: 1. Pray for me and for Fathering Our Future 2. Consider financially supporting Fathering Our Future 3. Email your testimony, feedback, and ideas to fatheringourfuture@gmail.com It is a privilege and blessing to be able to serve dads. 33:47The topic of discipline is one parents are uneasy about. Just think about how many times you’ve seen a parent pull their kid close or off to the side and whisper in their ear and immediately the demeanor of the child changed. You know they whispered something along the lines of, “when we get home (fill in the blank).” And you know that because you have probably done something similar. Usually one of the reasons parents do this is to avoid criticism for how they choose to discipline. Now the underlying reason for this is we do not hear a lot taught about discipline. Sadly, nearly every time the topic comes up among parents a debate about spanking breaks out. That is sad because that is not what discipline is about. I am going to share six things that I have learned about discipline that will: Help you think about it correctly Change your approach Think less about yourself and more about your kid More effectively fulfill the mission of fatherhood Discipline no longer needs to be a hush hush topic. Dads need to talk about it, share what they’ve learned, and join together to more faithfully father our future. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

54:24When caught in the hustle of life, we miss all of the incredible things happening around us and right in front of us. We end days feeling tired, unfulfilled, and like our life is lacking in so many ways. The issue is not a lack in our lives. The issue is we are not present enough to catch all of the wonderful moments. Randy Hain, executive coach, leadership consultant, and author of the book "Being Fully Present" joins me to talk about doing just that; being fully present. Randy shares several personal encounters and experiences that were packed full of beautiful lessons that have enriched his life and how he was able to capture them. 22:35I’m not sure I’ve ever met anyone who enjoys being called out. That usually implies a mistake was made in secret and then exposed publicly. Most people generally don’t approve of this gesture, especially when it comes from one of their kids. Should we tolerate that from our kids? While I’ve seen plenty of mouths popped for calling a parent out (and I’m not talking about disrespectful back talk), I think there is a much better way for us to respond to that. My 6 year old son called me out the other day. I heard what he said and he was not wrong. We commonly read this story and make the mistake of thinking it is about the lost son when in reality it’s mainly about his dad. There are several things we can learn from this dad but I want you to focus on three things this week. 1. His willingness to let go and allow his son to leave. 2. His commitment to his son that he patiently and faithfully displayed. 3. His eagerness to swiftly give grace. 25:56We all have things we want to do in life. We have goals we want to achieve, disciplines we want to maintain, and daily tasks we want to complete. We all have an agenda but we need to question ourselves periodically and make sure our agendas are really as important as we claim they are. Over the last couple of months my life has been a whirlwind. My wife had a foot surgery that put her out of commission for a while, leaving all responsibilities on me. The extra workload through off most of my plans, which impacted me negatively. When expectations are not met, I, like everyone else, tend to get slightly frustrated. Sadly, this was passed on to my kids. However, I am so grateful for the experience I am sharing with you today that gave me clarity on the importance of my personal agenda. 17:17As fathers, we all experience numerous challenges and setbacks, but it's crucial to understand that failures should not discourage us; rather, they serve as valuable sources of wisdom. When we stumble, we should reflect, learn from our mistakes, and continue with a mindful approach, incorporating newfound insights. Recently, I had an enlightening experience that helped me apply wisdom learned from a past failure. While working on a project for the kids outside, I asked for my son's assistance in looking after his younger sister. However, my expectations were not met, resulting in a minor disaster that I had to deal with. In that moment, I had a choice as a father: I could have blamed my son for not following my instructions, or I could have recognized that he is just a child and that I am ultimately responsible for his sister's well-being. I want to inspire you to embrace your identity and responsibility as a dad. 22:20I stumbled across an article a while back that addressed 9 things we should never say to our children at mealtime. The premise of the article was that we can create bad impression about food and diets by speaking up about particular things when we are at the table with our kids. For example, telling our kids that they need to finish their broccoli before they can have dessert is apparently a bad idea because our kids' bodies might not want broccoli. As dads, we are leaders in the home. We are there to serve our children and we cannot do that by disengaging from their lives and not giving the the guidance and direction they need. There are some that would like to encourage us to lose our parental authority but if we want our kids to have an advantage as they mature, we must use our wisdom and authority to make that possible. Join me as I go through the list of what we should supposedly never say and provide my opinion on these points. There might be a couple of points worth taking away from the article but there might be a lot of ridiculous examples that make you shake your head. 27:49Are you feeling overwhelmed and dissatisfied with your life? Many fathers today can relate to these sentiments, and it's completely understandable. However, it's important to remember that chaos and unfulfillment don't have to be permanent. As a dad, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you no longer have time to focus on personal growth and improvement. But being a dad should not be seen as an excuse; in fact, it should be a driving force to strive for personal excellence. The key lies in establishing and living by a set of principles that guide your life. In this episode, I want to emphasize the transformative power of living a principled life. By consciously adopting and adhering to principles, you can effectively combat and eventually overcome the chaos and unfulfillment you may be experiencing. No matter what challenges you face, dedicating yourself to living each day in alignment with your principles will pave the way for personal growth, continual improvement, and eventual success. Remember, chaos and unfulfillment are not permanent states. By prioritizing personal development and embracing a principled approach to life, you can regain control and find fulfillment. 56:55Fatherlessness plagues our society. The lack of dads in the home has a plethora of negative implications on children which stay with them as they grow into adults. Men who become dads, that grew up without a dad themselves, struggle with thoughts of acceptance, belonging, value, and ability when it comes to being a dad. Cedric Austin, a minister, husband, and dad who grew up without a dad, joins me to talk about his journey to overcoming fatherlessness. He has a remarkable story of reuniting with his dad for the first time but he was still left with a number of unanswered questions. Cedric gives great advice on how men who grew up without dads can start the journey to overcoming the negative impacts of fatherlessness. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

1:00:08Everyone knows marriage takes work. What everyone might not know is that the work we put into our marriage manifests itself in our family. As we grow and become better husbands, we ultimately become better dads. As we strengthen our marriage we strengthen our family because our marriage becomes a beacon to our children of one of the greatest components of life, relationship. I'm joined today by Adam King of Dear Young Married Couple and we discuss a primary hurdle we face within marriage, ourselves. It can be very easy for us to point the finger and accuse our spouse, but the reality is there is a lot within ourselves that we have not been brave enough to deal with. Fortunately, Adam points out an incredible gift God has given us that allows us to grow individually and as a union with our wife, curiosity. 27:59You've heard it said that anything worth doing is challenging, and fatherhood certainly falls into that category. Being the dad our children need us to be requires a lot more than simply waking up in the morning and going about our day. We have to be intentional and work at building relationships with our children so that we can understand their needs. As we aim to be the dads our children need, we find ourselves faced with a couple of obstacles. Firstly, this goal requires us to grow and become something that we may not currently be. Secondly, being the dad our children need is not always the same as being the dad our children may want. Even though this pursuit comes with its difficulties, the impact of our effort is immense. What we build and establish with our children influences the lives of those with whom our kids connect. We may never fully realize the scope of that impact, but it makes this journey called fatherhood so worth it. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

24:41Do you want to be a good dad? I know the default desire is for us to pursue being a good dad. However, the more I reflect on fatherhood and the Scriptures, the more I am convinced that trying to be a good dad is the wrong goal. My great-uncle used to regular state this simple expression, "I think I could get more done, if I knew what I was supposed to be doing." Seems obvious and common sense, yet those are usually the things we do worst at. We all want to be better dads, but do we know what we are supposed to be doing as dads? As Christian dads our mission is to equip and disciple our children to be a part of God's mission in a greater capacity than ourselves. How do we accomplish that? Do we mandate what our children do? Do we tell our kids to do all the right things we do not do ourselves? I am going to share how we go about fulfilling this mission and what we should focus on. — For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

1:05:40As fathers we are leaders but in a world with hundreds of definitions regarding what a leader is, how should we think of our leadership? Dr. Eugene Wilson, author, minister, and leadership guru enters the conversation today to help us understand our leadership as dads. He provides a definition of leadership that is applicable to our mission as dads and lays out practical steps for us to grow as leaders. In addition to our development, Dr. Wilson teaches us ways we can work with our children to help them develop into leaders. Everyone at some point will find themselves in a position of leadership and influence, so as dads, we should make a point to train and develop our children for that time. While Eugene, like the rest of us, is not the perfect dad, you’ll see how his Biblical approach to fatherhood has produced fruit and leadership qualities in his children. Dr. Eugene Wilson is an author, speaker, consultant, and coach who serves as president of Texas Bible College and as an executive pastor. 51:38On Memorial Day we give honor to those who have fought and fallen for our country. We also give honor to the families who live on without that mom or dad, son or daughter. We appreciate your service. Those who choose to serve the United States of America choose to sacrifice a lot. Some are willing to face combat and even give their lives for our liberties. For men serving in such a great capacity it can be difficult for them to also serve as dads. Today, I am joined by Michael Mettlen, a former soldier in the United States' Army. Mike was confronted with a harsh reality when returning home from a deployment. His wife asked their daughter, "Where's daddy?" and their daughter ran away from him and pointed to a picture of him on the wall. This was a wakeup call that prompted Mike to not just be a picture on the wall but to be an intentional father. Mike shares his experiences and his struggles of trying to be a dad while simultaneously serving his country. His story provides insight for those of us who have never served to help us better appreciate the sacrifice of those who choose to serve. It also provides wisdom to those currently serving on how they can be better dads everyday. -- For more content make sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ and if you'd like to support this effort visit: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

Somehow participation trophies have become a hot topic and a debate in our generation. There are even lawmakers who are setting out to eliminate participation trophies for children in their state. I could understand this if participation trophies were inherently evil but they are not. They are typically really cheap and poorly made paper weights with misspelled words on them. Somehow people are convinced that these inanimate objects are the culprits weakening our children. I want to expose this debate as meaningless today and shift the attention to the real issue. I want dads to realize that they are more powerful than a cheap piece of plastic. I want fathers to understand the power of their voice and influence. Moms are remarkable. They work, they keep the house more than we probably do, they constantly tend to the kids, they put up with us, and they help us become better dads. Considering all moms do, they probably need more than one special day a year. God intended for us, husbands, to love our wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it. Jesus was the suffering servant who gave because He loved. We are called to love and serve our wives. However, you might not know what that looks like. In this week's episodes I share four ways we can better serve our wives. Trust me, these are great because I got them from my wife and of course, she's never wrong. I'll talk about the importance of communication and how that opens the door for the other three ways we can serve our wives: acknowledgment, proactive assistance, and rest. --- Be sure to check out https://fatheringourfuture.com/ for more content and considering supporting this effort by visiting: https://fatheringourfuture.com/support/…

Time is so often enemy number one for many of us. We have so much to do and not enough time to do it in. The only way we feel we can accomplish anything or make progress in life is to constantly be in a hurry. We rush through life and lie to ourselves by calling it efficiency. Our kids do not function that way. Their life is not as demanding as ours, and honestly, our lives are not as demanding as we think they are. My goal is not just to remind you of these components but to reignite a passion within you to embrace who you are as a man and to strive with excellence to fulfill the mission you have as a father. Losing control and never addressing our problems is not masculine. It is time that we drop this macho mask that says everything is fine, and we get the help we need. We were not made to do this alone. We need help in life and it is time to stop waiting.…
