La identidad
Los indios llegaron a odiar su propia identidad. Llegaron a pensar sobre ellos mismos que eran “bárbaros ignorantes” y que, para salvarse de las tinieblas, tenían que civilizarse. Tenían que aprender de los españoles.
Así funciona el racismo, denuncia Galeano. Los españoles se creían superiores como especie. Veían a los indios como salvajes y creían que era justo imponerles lo que ellos sabían.
“La historia cambia según la voz que la cuenta”, escribió Galeano. Él decidió contar la historia con la voz de los indios.

The identity
The Indians came to hate their own identity. They came to think of themselves that they were "ignorant barbarians" and that, to save themselves from darkness, they had to civilize. They had to learn from the Spanish.
This is how racism works, Galeano denounces. The Spanish believed themselves superior as a species. They saw the Indians as savages and believed that it was fair to impose on them what they knew.
"The story changes according to the voice that tells it," Galeano wrote. He decided to tell the story with the voice of the Indians.
