On Season 1 Episode 18 of Dialégomai: The PĒØPŁËŠ Conversation, hosts Travis and Kyra Gold exegetically examine Mark 10:32-45.

In Mark 10:36, Jesus asks His disciples, James and John “What do you want me to do for you?” and their response is both revealing and confronting. James and John had begun to subtly long that their ministry with Jesus would provide them a position of prominence and a platform for significance. How often do we do the same?

Travis and Kyra discuss how sometimes we think we have earned something from Jesus because of our commitment and sacrifice to Him, slipping into entitlement, expecting Him to make our lives more comfortable, make our ministries more fruitful, and make our relationships less messy because we love and follow Him.

They delve into the fact that our genuine love for Christ does not mean that everything we do, say or desire will be aligned with the cost and claims of following Christ. Explaining how our closeness to Jesus does not make us immune to impure desires. And how it is possible for disciples of Christ to desire prominence in ways no different than the world. Simply attaching Jesus‘s name to sinful desires does not change the fact that they are sinful. But Jesus, in His infinite goodness, hears our requests and lovingly responds in truth.

They end on a biblical note of encouragement reminding us that it is God who appoints and prepares us for what He has called us to, in His Name for His glory.

The King of kings humbled Himself to the point of death, giving His life in love for you. Therefore, leadership in His church isn’t about self-exalting power and privilege but instead about service and sacrifice.
