We want to find explanations and reasons for everything and it drives us crazy when things don't work out as they should. Or when the supposed happy ending seems to fizzle out into nothing. Certainly, we're promised an abundant life in Christ with purpose and eternity with God, but then why is life so complicated and difficult, even for believers? Ecclesiastes teaches us to temper our quest for answers and to rely primarily on our earthly duty: to fear God and keep His commandments. Not an easy pill to swallow, but one that comes with a remedy for the restlessness and anxiousness of our hearts.
