In this episode, Frauke sits down with Priestess, Aromatherapist, and Author Stephanie Rose Bird to talk about her book A Healing Grove: African Tree Remedies and Rituals for the Body and Spirit. Stephanie shares what the sense of smell means to her, she reveals what scent memories stay with her from her childhood growing up in southern New Jersey. Stephanie reads a moving passage from her book and explains what got her to write this important reference guide. She shares what deep meaning trees have to her, and what importance they hold in the African diaspora. Stephanie then takes us to Indigenous Africa and shares some fascinating origin stories of remedies and ingredients we commonly use today. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the importance of sustainability and conservation, and the need for us all to be environmentalists and conservationists.
