In the 1980s, there were only 63 Black films by, for, or about Black Americans. But in the 1990s, that number quadrupled, with 220 Black films making their way to cinema screens nationwide. What sparked this “Black New Wave?” Who blazed this path for contemporaries like Ava DuVernay, Kasi Lemmons and Jordan Peele? And how did these films transform American culture as a whole? Hey listeners! Just FYI there won't be an Orphan Black episode next week due to a scheduling conflict, so soak up this one and enjoy it until we return the following week!
This episode we get to see the first-ever footage of someone attempting to remove a maggot-bot, and it's the worst thing ever. Like, so bad. The kind of thing that wouldn't even occur to me if I were trying to invent something terrible, because it's just crossing some kind of mental line for me. Nope. I hate it. I hate it so much.
And I hate it all the more because surprise surprise, it turns out that Sarah has one implanted in her cheek. NOOOOOOO I HATE IT.
Also, there's a much less dramatic but no less upsetting thing happening with Fe. We've been used to him being there every time anything has needed doing, and this episode really points out how much Sarah and the audience have taken it for granted that he will always be there when she needs him. Turns out, finding out that she's actually related to Siobhan has fucked him up a bit, and spurred him to look up who his birth family are. On top of that, there's finally resentment bubbling to the surface, and he's taking a step back from the whole mess of Clone Club. Can't say as I blame him.
Thanks again to all of you for listening, and see you in 2 weeks!
