A Message To My Younger Self

If I could travel back in time and talk to my younger self, I would tell the younger me at least 115 lessons I have learned.

  1. Make sure your priorities are in order.
  2. You are expendable (But not at home—God, Family, Church).
  3. Never force your family to carry the workload of the church. The church members must take ownership of the church, do the work necessary to maintain the church, and do what is necessary to keep the church functioning.
  4. Do not allow your wife to be the pastor.
  5. Get to know the people in your congregation. This means you will need to spend time with them.
  6. Learn how to say no without feeling guilty. It’s OK to say “No.”
  7. Learn how to be quiet.
  8. Learn how to introduce someone to Jesus.
  9. Learn how to build a sermon from a text.
  10. Learn how to preach.
  11. Learn how to lead a worship service.
  12. Learn to say “I don’t know” when you don’t.
  13. Never allow people to put you on a pedestal.
  14. Never allow the church to become your identity.
  15. Don’t demand people call you by titles such as “Reverend,” “Pastor,” “Preacher,” “Brother,” etc. You cannot command respect by demanding it.
  16. Always remember, life is more than ministry.
  17. Always guard your testimony.
  18. Always walk with integrity.
  19. always tell the truth, even when it hurts.
  20. As much as possible, integrate the youth into the life and ministry of the church.
  21. Don’t act like a teenager. Grow up and be a good example.
  22. Beware of the two primary traps pastors fall into—money and women. Never touch the money; avoid any situation where moral compromise is even a remote possibility.
  23. Choose wisely the battles you need to fight. Not every hill is worth dying on, and every challenge to your authority is worthy of a fight.
  24. Be authentic, transparent (But not too transparent), and genuine. Be a real human being with real frailties and faults.
  25. You will often see ugly behavior.
  26. You will be guilty of ugly behavior.
  27. No matter how hard you try, not everyone will like you.
  28. You will be hurt deeply by people in the church.
  29. Beware whom you trust in the ministry.
