As children, we all had dreams and got lost in the ideas of our future selves. We imagined following certain careers, pursuing our passions, or inventing products that would change the world. As we grew up, reality harshly got in the way — sweeping these aspirations completely under the rug. But there is always a way. Revisiting your childhood dreams can open doors to finding who you are meant to be.

In this episode, CEO of BLD Medical Consulting Ron Richard shares the blueprint to getting your ideas out of your coffee cup and on the market. He talks about the key takeaways from his book Someday is TODAY! and his passion for medicine, inventing, and music.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

  • The importance of revisiting your childhood dreams
  • How to overcome the fear of failure
  • Inventing products in the medical field
  • Ways to get project funding
  • Overcoming setbacks and finding inspiration

Episode Highlights:

[05:11] Ron’s Background

Ron has been working in the medical industry for more than 35 years, with experience in respiratory, pulmonary, and sleep medicine. He also enjoys writing music and performing live concerts.

Growing up, Ron dreamed of becoming a musician and going on band tours. He didn't quite make it, but he continued to try different things and opportunities. Going through constant change and adjustment got him over his fear of failure.

Ron says that getting into respiratory medicine was purely accidental after being referred by a friend. His career in respiratory care then sparked his interest in inventing products.

[16:08] Experiencing a Heart Attack

Ron experienced a type of heart attack called the widowmaker while playing golf with his son. He went into full cardiac arrest and had to be cardioverted three times.

The experience was an awakening for him. It pushed him to reexamine how he wants to spend his time between now and when he leaves earth.

[19:16] Getting Your Ideas Out of Your Coffee Cup and on the Market

Ron's book Someday is TODAY! is a blueprint for clinicians interested in creating medical products and putting them out on the market.

The reason many projects fail in the medical industry is underfunding, but finding funding can start with family and friends. And then, you can work your way up to venture capital, private equity, and Reg D until you reach an IPO.

[31:15] How His Work Impacts His Life and Mindset

Working and traveling all over the world has taken its toll on Ron. He has experienced several setbacks and failures in the majority of products he has launched.

From his work and interests, the three people he wants to sit at his table at a party are Stephen Hawking, Walter Cronkite, and Mick Fleetwood.
