Elliot Ackerman is both a former White House Fellow and Marine, and served five tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he received the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for Valor, and the Purple Heart.

Ackerman is also as an ex–CIA paramilitary officer.

His new book (co-written with Adm. James Stavridis USN (Ret.)) is The New York Times bestseller 2034: A Novel of the Next World War.

Elliot Ackerman explains how the United States and China could sleepwalk into a world war with one another and the disastrous outcomes of such a global battle.

He also reflects on the book’s relationship to Cold War techno thrillers such as Tom Clancy’s novels, the vulnerabilities of America’s high-tech superweapons such as the F-35 and F-22 fighter planes, and how the country’s 9/11 forever wars in the Middle East and elsewhere have left the U.S. military underprepared to fight a peer competitor such as China.

And Ackerman warns the American people that unlike the conflicts abroad in the aftermath of 9/11 that a war with China may change life as they know it forever.
