On today's podcast, Amy talks with Stephanie Sohl, Ph.D. Stephanie is a health psychologist and an Assistant Professor at the Wake Forest School of Medicine. Her research focuses on the mind-body relationship and cancer survivorship. Specifically, she aims to strengthen the evidence base for scalable mind-body approaches such as yoga and integrative health coaching that aims to empower patients with strategies for achieving optimal health.

Her work is innovative because she adapts mind-body approaches that may be efficacious so they can be integrated into and enhance conventional care. For example, her current Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) supports an investigation of a brief yoga intervention targeted to reduce fatigue that's taught in a clinical setting during chemotherapy for colorectal cancer.

Amy and Stephanie talk about her journey and how she got started, the research studies she has participated in, Stephanie’s career goals, how she became a yoga researcher, and much more.

They talk about the following:

  • How Stephanie was able to combine being a researcher and a yogi
  • Stephanie’s personal experience and how she got started
  • What it takes to become a Yoga Therapy Researcher
  • Where yoga therapists and yoga teachers fit into the research paradigm
  • Using yoga therapist and yoga teachers for protocol development
  • The research grants Stephanie has received and how she accomplished this
  • Stephanie’s first research studies and how they grew into where they are today
  • The value of relationships in research and academics
  • Stephanie’s thoughts on telemedicine/ telehealth, especially for rural populations
  • Stephanie’s goals, and hopes for the future of telehealth and online learning

We have all benefitted from the ancient wisdom of India and her people, so it feels really great to be able to serve in this way. The Optimal State family has pledged on-going support of $250 per month, to go directly to KYM Mitra (www.kym.org). We will collect the monies and gift them each month. Please consider a recurring monthly payment to the fund. Even a small gift or intention makes a difference! If we make more than $250 in any given month, it will roll into the following month’s payment. The hope is that we can contribute for many years to come. If you even lose the link to donate, it is at the top of the homepage at www.amywheeler.com also. I will be reporting on the website the progress; how much money is coming in at any given time and where we are in the process of getting this project off the ground.

Here is the link for you to get started with your donation. We are so happy that you have decided to join us. We thank you for the bottom of our hearts!
