Auteur Tom Watson werkte jarenlang als speechschrijver voor verschillende Amerikaanse politici. Totdat hij op een dag, tijdens een telefoongesprek, een tekening maakte van een hond.

Zijn kinderen vroegen hem wat deze hond moest voorstellen, waardoor Tom een naam en een verhaal bedacht voor zijn creatie. En zo werd Stick Dog geboren.
