Welcome to the first ever episode of the Portable Power Podcast! Each Saturday we'll be exploring five new Game Boy games, in chronological order, from the humble beginnings of 1989.
The launch titles were hit and miss. Baseball was an underwhelming way to start whichever way you look at it, and would be quickly overshadowed by a bunch of better baseball games. Tennis is almost good, but again suffers from unfinished testing and would be replaced by a superior tennis title.
Alleyway is cool for a casual block-breaking romp if a smidge empty. And Yakuman is a perfect representation of what it is - something that the majority of listeners probably won't be that interested in.
Then, of course, Super Mario Land also exists. Try not to judge it too retrospectively because it really is a special little game. I happily revisit Sarasaland every once in a while, despite Mario's later Game Boy adventures being much more comprehensive, as there's so much nostalgia attached to it.
