Gowan fell in love at first sight with the quiet Edie at a ball. Edie was quiet because she had a fever. After corresponding, which mentioned pricks, they got married and journeyed home to Scotland. Both being novices at love and being young, they had a lot of growing to do individually and as a couple.
Grace had a childhood crush on Colin which continued to grow despite a physical distance. The letters that Grace sent Colin kept them connected and kept Colin grounded while he was in the navy. Grace knew too much about Colin’s state of mind and his need of escapism from the dark side of war. But his preference for escapism cost him Grace and his connection to home.
There’s no such thing as a perfect relationship. Issues happen to couples who are married or unmarried. Work still needs to happen to strengthen a couple whether married or unmarried. When problems arise, we figure out what we need to do to wiggle into our partner’s good graces and learn from the situation. Once in a while, there’s actual climbing involved to get our significant other to communicate with us.
